Tyler Forrest, a senior from Athens, Tenn., recounted his UTC experience to the Student Government Association in his last senate meeting, on Tuesday.

Forrest said he had not planned to attend UTC to begin with.

"I came to my orientation and I had a horrendous experience," he said. "I left here crying. I came back in the fall and applied to be in the freshman senate and got denied."

Forrest said he spent most of his first semester in his room and going to class and he now an advocate for people not doing that.

"I don't want you to get frustrated with what you do," he said. "State government is very slow. Some projects which I proposed when I first started SGA are just now taking form."

He said UTC's SGA is the best in the state because of the support it gets from the administration.

Forrest closed his speech by saying, "I wish you all the best. This is obviously hard for me but I have had a tremendous experience and I thank you all."

He became emotional when he said this and he received a warm ovation from his fellow SGA members.

Yancy Freeman, assistant vice chancellor of enrollment services, spoke to the senate about a new refund check policy in the same meeting.

He said students who receive refunds have previously been able to pick them up the Friday before classes start at the beginning of the semester. However, students now have to wait a week into the semester before they can get their checks.

The senators were largely upset by this change.

Freeman said bookstore loans would be available for students who need to buy their books before they get their refund.

Daniel Hunley, a senior from Jackson, Tenn. and SGA chief of staff, pointed out that many students buy their books from online to get cheaper prices. He said some students will not have this option with the new policy.

Patrick Morin, a sophomore from Clarksville, Tenn. and Academic Affairs chair, was named senator of the month of March in this week's meeting for his work on SGA's Professor Appreciation event.
