Sports Illustrated may have turned more heads than usual by featuring U.S. Olympians in the recent release of its annual swimsuit issue.

Lindsey Vonn, Hannah Teter, Lacy Schnoo and Claire Bidez appear in multi- page photo spreads in the 2010 swimsuit issue of SI. Vonn, Teter and Schnoo are all on the 2010 Olympic team; and their sexy photographs are under controversy.

The pictorials are not distasteful or indecent. The women are featured in a few suggestive photos. However, in most of the pictures, the women are wearing designer swimsuits and are propped with winter accessories or sports equipment.

According to nbc.olympics.com Teter said, "The pictures are a little risque, but they're totally not sexual. Bodies are beautiful and should be appreciated."

Although the women are revealing some skin, we do not think they are acting inappropriately and feel the photos are positive outburst of feminism.

Most of the pictures display the women in bikinis, some even in one pieces, which is no different than what one should expect to see at the beach.

The pictorials display female athletes who have obtained great bodies because their athletic passion requires them to be in excellent shape. They are not celebrity sex symbols aspiring to be a centerfold.

According to nbc.olympics.com Vonn said, "Models work so hard to be in that magazine, and for them to ask me to be in it was really cool."

It is honorable that these women are being admired for their athletic figures. They are so often seen in helmets and protective gear that they do not get a chance to reveal their femininity and sexuality to the public.

Also, it is vital for young girls to look up to successful women other than those so focused and reliant on the physical charm of their bodies.

Actresses and singers are entertainers and are always in the public eye. Many of them put great effort into keeping a shapely, attractive body because it helps to preserve their spot on the ever so evolving red carpet. Athletes do not sustain their figure because of vanity. They actually need a fit body to perform their best.

The shots celebrate the beauty of strong female body. It is a positive representation of sexuality and shape because the photos depict women with the tonality and build of a healthy body, not a starved figure. The pictures capture the beauty of an athletic, female body in a subtle and sexy manner.

With these photo spreads, the female Olympians can confirm their hard work and exercise result in more than a medal or World Cup.
