The housing department has begun using a new online application process to increase convenience for students.
Starting this semester, students will be able to use the online application to choose rooms based on their preference, Steven Hood, director of housing said.
Beginning with upperclassmen, students are allowed to visit the online application and select a room during their allotted days, Hood said.
"It was designed much like an airline online ticket system, that's the concept," Hood said. "Much like a person could log online and pick and choose from available seats on a particular flight, that's how this system works."
The system was implemented to increase convenience and efficiency for students, Hood said.
"Before, housing was managed by two separate companies, and South Campus was considered a separate part of campus, but after the university took over last year, we wanted to design a process that will be easier for students," Hood said. "This system will allow students to work around their time instead of ours."
In January, housing hosted a series of information sessions to demonstrate the new process for students.
"We had about 100 students to attend," Hood said. "And the feedback was very strong."
Pricilla Moragne, a Memphis freshmen said, "I hope it's much easier than last year's process."
More than 1,000 returning students have paid the reservation fee to reserve a room, and although the new process is designed to be easier for students, the biggest challenge is communicating with students, Hood said.
One particular issue students must deal with is payment. Victoria Davis, a Memphis freshmen said, "I don't think it's convenient that students can't pay the reservation fee in cash because not all students have credit or debit cards."
Students can visit the housing Web site, www.utc.edu/Administration/StudentHousing/, to learn more about which days they will be eligible to register and watch instructional videos about how to complete the application.
