UTC students have risen to the challenge of helping the people of Haiti after an earthquake devastated the region almost a month ago.

Organizations such as greek life, the Chancellor's Office and Student Government have developed plans for helping the victims of Haiti. Student Government created buckets for students to donate money at all Aramark locations.

"It does not surprise me at all that students have taken this cause to heart. UTC students always make an effort to give to the less fortunate," Carol Oglesby, coordinator of student civic engagement said.

Students also found a way to include more variety in fundraising through an off-campus benefit concert at the Riverhouse.

Stacy Richardson, a Chattanooga senior who helped plan the event, said the non-profit concert raised nearly one thousand dollars for the American Red Cross Disaster International Relief Fund.

"Our generation cares about problems and helping to solve them, but we show it in different ways. I think that throwing a benefit party allowed a creative outlet for people to show their support," Richardson said.

The Riverhouse allowed their facilities to be used at no cost and two local musical groups, Milele Roots and DJ K7 performed at the event, Richardson said.

"The Riverhouse was very generous to donate their space to us for free," Richardson said. "We had a local artist paint on site, which was sold in a silent auction."

UTC students continue to show compassion for their local and international communities by reaching out to those in need through charity events and fundraisers, Olgesby said.

"Our students have clothing drives, nonperishable food drives, collect cell phones, donate blood and bone marrow and give the gift of time whenever possible-that is just a few of the ways our students come through to help communities or individuals in need," Oglesby said.
