In the first week of the 2009-10 season, the UTC basketball coaching staff created a splash concerning the 2010-11 season and beyond.
The Mocs got a jump on recruiting and signed two players that could see significant playing time as early as next season.
Philip Jurick made headlines in his time at East Ridge High School in the Chattanooga area, and originally signed with the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 2008. But after redshirting at Knoxville, Jurick transferred to Chattanooga State - where he is currently - and has decided to come to UTC next season, pending graduation from the community college.
Jurick's size attracted top schools such as UTK and the University of Indiana initially, but when the 6-foot-11, 275-lb. post-man left Knoxville, he decided to come back home.
Jurick averaged 17.8 points and 15.9 rebounds-per-game for East Ridge and was ranked highly by recruiting services around the country.
Rivals.com listed him as the 68th best player in his class at one point and was rated as a four-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Coach John Shulman announced that Anthony "A.D." Banks had also signed scholarship papers to come to Chattanooga next fall. The 6-foot-7, 210-lb. forward is currently a senior at North Cross School in Roanoke, Va.
Banks was listed as a high-major prospect on espn.com Scouts Inc. ratings after averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds as a junior.
According to espn.com, Banks also considered Southern Conference schools Appalachian State and Western Carolina.
The signings figure to give Chattanooga depth next season - something which is an issue early in the 2009-10 season for the Mocs.
