More than 500 students attended the bonfire on Chamberlain field Nov. 11 which was a celebration of the football team's last game this season.
Terry Denniston, executive assistant to the chancellor, said the event was an idea from the freshman senate, but groups around campus have wanted to host a bonfire for years.
"[Freshman senate's] enthusiasm and push made those of us who had to check things out and do it excited and make it happen," Denniston said.
She said everything was a student suggestion and the administration only helped by navigating through the bureaucracy.
Daniel Hunley, a junior from Jackson, Tenn. and Student Government Association chief of staff, said it was difficult meeting all the safety requirements. He said representatives from the Chattanooga Fire Department oversaw and helped build the fire.
"The way the fire was built itself was the way a professional bonfire would be built," Hunley said.
Fire department representatives were on site the entire time, Hunley said.
Tyler Forrest, SGA president and a senior from Athens, Tenn., said he thinks this event was one of the best sports-related events that has ever happened on campus.
"This is in iconic display of UTC students coming out and supporting their campus," Forrest said. "I really believe this is the first step in a good direction."
Denniston said the football
coaches were thrilled with the turnout and she said she thinks the bonfire was tremendous.
"Seeing a student idea take root with a small group of people and bringing together 500 plus students on a rainy evening, just goes to show what students can do," Denniston said.
Hunley said he wants to keep this event for a long time and see it become as synonamous with UTC student life as an event like Oak Street Roast.
"The amazing student turnout proved to me that we were truly successful in restoring the glory," Hunley said.
Camille Douglas, a Nashville sophomore, said she thinks the bonfire is a great tradition that should be continued.
"I'm a Sugar Moc, so I came to cheer on the team and get excited about the game," Douglas said.
She said she also thinks many students do not know about the football games which is why they don't come.
Jarred Kline, a Chattanooga junior, said, "This is so much better than the usual stuff we do on Friday before the game," Kline said.
