Students find job openings both on and off campus through university resources, but around the holidays the options may be a bit more unusual.

The Placement and Student Employment Center, located on the second floor of the UC, has an array of resources for finding a job.

Most listings can be found on their Web site, which is updated every time a new listing appears.

"If students are interested in part-time jobs, they can stop by room 315 in the UC or go to our Web page," Jean Dake, director of placement and student employment, said.

"The seasonal jobs are usually related to retail," Dake said.

Right now, for example, Things Remembered at Hamilton Place Mall has a part-time engraver position over the holiday season, Dake said.

Dake also recalled a more out-of-the-ordinary listing posted a few weeks ago by Ruby Falls Haunted Cavern, which needed part-time employees to work as costumed entertainers at its haunted cave.

Rock City is also currently looking for seasonal employees to aid in the influx of visitors during the holiday season.

Evan Kelley, a senior from Nashville, said he washed windows for three weeks over the winter break.

"It was around Christmas in 2007, and I realized I didn't have any money to buy Christmas presents," Kelley said.

He said it was more difficult to wash windows in the winter rather than summer.

"You have to work a little bit faster in the winter because if you don't, the water will freeze on the window," Kelley said.

Whether students are searching for a part-time job on or off campus during the holiday season or any other time of the year, information can be found at the Placement and Student Employment Center office, or on the center's Web site.
