Kirwa paces Mocs' cross country

UTC's cross-country teams attended the 2009 Southern Conference cross-country championships Saturday at Elon University in Elon, N.C. last weekend.

This was the men's 80th annual cross country championship and the women's 25th appearance.

The Lady Mocs finished sixth and the men's team finished fourth.

Chattanooga junior Emmanuel Kirwa, from Kapsabet, Kenya was named SoCon's Runner of the Year Saturday.

Kirwa was also named Runner of the Year, which claimed him a spot on the All-Conference first team.

Kirwa finished first in the 8-kilometer course with a time of 25:00.38.

Joshue Vasquez, from Kingsport, Tenn., was the men's second finisher in 16th place with a time of 25:53.99, while freshman Kyle McLarty, from Collierville, Tenn., was 29th overall with a time of 26:30.54.

McLarty and freshman Mark Cole, from McKenzie, Tenn. were both named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.

Cole was the Mocs fifth scoring runner and placed 33rd with a time of 26:38.97.

He finished behind senior David Moore, from Ontario, Canada, who was 32nd with a time of 26:36.63. Junior Anneli Uys, from Somerville, Australia, led the Lady Mocs to a sixth place finish in the 5-Kilometer race. She placed third with a time of 18:11.62.

Ontario, Canada native Heather Stuive finished in second place for the Lady Mocs. Her efforts earned her a spot on the All-Freshman team and the All-Conference team along with Uys.

Freshmen and Brentwood, Tenn. natives Kathryn Stuart and Mary Cumbee finished 27th and 33rd, respectively.

Both the men's and women's teams will begin preparations for the NCAA South Region meet, which will be at the University of Alabama Nov. 14.
