"UTC has been a partner with the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce for quite a long time, and we are proud to have been involved with the Volkswagen recruitment effort from the beginning," Chuck Cantrell, assistant vice chancellor of university relations, said. "This is just another logical step in our continuing relationship with the Chamber and Volkswagen."
For the Lupton Library, to host a VW application site, training was necessary. Stephen Leather, information technology specialist at Lupton Library said the training occurred at Tennessee Career Center.
"There were people coming from all over the area to see what was going to happen because Volkswagen was presenting [at the center]," Leather said.
Cantrell said UTC is thrilled about Volkswagen.
"We are so excited about Volkswagen coming to our community, and we want to be good neighbors," he said. "It's important for local residents who are seeking jobs at Volkswagen to know that UTC has a relationship with the company."
According to Leather, Volkswagen was expecting 100,000 applicants.
"[Volkswagen] is only taking 2,000 for the plant at this time," he said. "But they are planning expansions in the future."
According to Theresa Liedtka, dean of the Lupton Library, Volkswagen has received over 20,000 applications since Oct. 26.
To be eligible for Volkswagen, Leather said a person must have a high school diploma, be over 18 years old and be legally allowed to work in the United States.
"Volkswagen came to Chattanooga knowing that
Chattanoogans don't build cars," Leather said. "They are willing to train you [for the positions]."
"Volkswagen is making it a priority to try to hire residents of the Hamilton County and the surrounding areas," Liedtka said. "This will be a real help to the local economy, [plus] we also thought some UTC students may be interested in applying for this or other jobs with VW."
