The Chattanooga volleyball team has dropped to 3-8 in Southern Conference play, winning only one out of five since fall break.

The Lady Mocs claimed a 3-0 win over the Citadel Saturday Oct. 17, but were swept by the College of Charleston, Samford, Furman and Wofford during that span.

The one thing that has been consistent in Chattanooga volleyball matches is that they will be quick, and the winner will be determined after the first set.

In every match except a 3-2 loss to Elon in the SoCon opener, the final has been 3-0 one way or the other. For the Lady Mocs, that result has not been favorable on a majority of occasions.

Saturday UTC traveled to Furman to take on the league-leading, undefeated Paladins in Greenville. Despite eight kills from Chattanooga sophomore Laura Brock and at least one kill from every starter except the freshman libero Paula Passmore, from Meritt Island, Fla., the Lady Mocs fell 3-0 to Furman.

The second set was the closest, when Furman held on to claim it 25-21.

The Lady Mocs came from behind to trail by only three in that second set, but eight errors to go along with Furman's .286 hitting percentage were too much to overcome.

Sunday the Lady Mocs stayed in South Carolina, traveling about thirty minutes northeast, to take on Wofford.

Brock once again paced the team with 13 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season, but the Lady Mocs could not bounce back after a close opening set.

Chattanooga outhit Wofford in the first, .224 to .217, and only committed three errors, but Wofford's 17 kills to Chattanooga's 14 lifted the Terriers to a 25-23 win.

After the promising opener, Chattanooga went on to only score 26 points in the two remaining sets, dropping them both 25-13.

To go along with her double-double, Brock committed nine errors in the match, and the Lady Mocs committed 25 errors in the final two sets combined.

Chattanooga has five SoCon games remaining on the schedule, including the final home match - senior night - against Appalachian State, where the team's lone senior, Cassie Connor, from Willow Springs, Ill., will be honored.

After Wednesday's "Dig Pink" game against Kennesaw State in which the Lady Mocs raised money to help the Side Out Foundation and breast cancer research, the team will travel to North Carolina for two matches.

Chattanooga faces off against the University of North Carolina Greensboro Saturday before traveling to Elon Sunday.
