This week, UTC Student Government Association members approved the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club as an official student organization.
"Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art of submissions…It's pretty safe," a representative of the club, Dean Chilcutt, a freshman from Cross Plains, Tenn., said.
The club will be open to any interested student or faculty member, and Chilcutt said he will lead classes in the ARC several evenings a week. Meetings will not begin, until the necessary mats are installed in the martial arts room in the ARC.
Chilcutt said ARC officials had not given him an exact date for the arrival of the mats.
Ryan Peck, director of marketing and promotions for UTC Athletics, was also present to tell SGA Senators about a forthcoming commercial to promote Mocs spirit within the community.
Peck said the commercial will be filmed in the coming week in places around the city and will air on local cable sports channels.
The Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE) and SGA will sponsor a visit by the Original Butt Sketch Artist on October 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the UC.
He will make free sketches for students of their backsides.
