Students are in for a pleasant surprise the next time they print off a syllabus or paper in the computer lab.

Assistant Vice Chancellor of Information Technology Marty Wilson said the pay-to-print charges have been dropped from 10 cents a copy to 7 cents.

Wilson said the fee reductions were implemented in response to a Student Government Association request to lower printing cost.

"[The Information Technology Department] evaluated that [7 cents] was the break even point," Wilson said. "This also helps with some of the green initiatives on campus."

Wilson said the printing system keeps students from abusing it.

"It encourages students to print off what they need," Wilson said.

Some students said they still prefer using their own printers, but are nevertheless excited about the lower printing fee.

"I don't print out a whole lot of stuff here anyway, but when I have [to print], it will be nice to now that I have a little extra money on my card," Jody Smith, a junior from Turtletown, Tenn., said.

Brad Culbreth, a freshman from Chickamauga, Ga., said he usually prints at home, like Smith, but he is happy about the reduced charge.

"I feel pretty good since it's cheaper now, " Culbreth said. "If I have to print [something on campus], it's way better."

Stephanie Williams, a Memphis sophomore, said she is enthusiastic about the new charge.

"I think it will save a lot of people more money, and they will be able to do more things with their class work," Williams said.

There is one minor concern with the new print costs. Calculations can print $9.94 worth of copies, leaving 6 cents. "The university seems to be hurting for money, so maybe the leftover funds could be put to good use," Brandon Sheppard, a Chattanooga senior said.

Michelle Morales, head of the Mocs Card Office, said students can counter this by having at least a penny in Mocs Bucks on their Mocs cards.
