Media Credit: Carolina Evans The wave of the future: IT specialist Rodger Ling uses the new MediaSite program to record himself giving a lecture, which students can download and watch in lieu of or in addition to attending lecture.

Mediasite, a way for students to view lectures online, is being implemented on campus and away.

Rodger Ling, IT specialist ,said,"Mediasite makes it easy for faculty to capture and broadcast their lectures over the web."

Chris Willis, technology specialist for continuing education, said UTC has had MediaSite for two years, but implementation began only a year ago.

"Mediasite is awesome because it takes the instructor's presentation and records them with a camera," Willis said. "We get the audio and video, and then we put a powerpoint link so students can go back and review the whole lecture."

Chuck Cantrell, vice chancellor of university relations, said: "Our college of nursing has been using this distance education of software, hardware for quite a while especially in the nurse anesthesia program. We actually have UTC students who are living and taking their classes in Mississippi."

Willis said, engineering management courses are also taking advantage of Mediasite.

Cantrell said, "We are able to provide a program of study to this rural community [in Mississippi],…and we are serving a desperate need."

Scott Monterde, professor with the school of nursing and CNRA classes, said, "Students can get up at two in the morning and just go online [to review the lecture]."

Ling said, in ten years, a predicted 50 percent of college students will never have to visit the campus. Ling said Mediasite will not affect attendance.

"Students are still able to get the full effect of the lectures…it does not have an impact on attendance one way or another," Ling said.

"Mediasite makes better use of class time, and it makes class more interactive," Willis said.
