The Student Government Association and Student Senate had a busy summer, and seem to have many exciting things in the works this semester.

Their first meetings of the 2009-2010 school year dealt primarily with first of year budgetary issues.

Of this year's $37,667.32 SGA budget, about 61 percent was allocated for SGA student employee salaries. This is a slight raise from previous years, but was presented as making up for a previous decrease in SGA salaries.

This money was allocated in an effort to replicate the procedure at other campuses who pay the tuition of SGA presidents and vice presidents along with a stipend for other SGA executives and committee leaders in return for the work they do for the school.

While UTC's SGA president and vice president still do not receive compensation for their full tuition, they also receive only about half or less of the current minimum wage for the time they spend in SGA business.

Also on the table during these beginning weeks of classes, was the budget allocation for the Association for Campus Entertainment.

Last semester, the SGA senate and the student body voted to dissolve SGA's entertainment committee in favor of passing SGA entertainment allocations to ACE. Senators unanimously passed the proposed SGA contribution to ACE of $7,500 for the fall semester.

This money will be added to ACE's budget to help fund campus entertainment such as last week's comedy show.

As information to freshman and a reminder to all students, Student Senate meetings are open to all students to observe what these campus leaders are working on. This is just one of many ways to be involved in campus activities and a good forum to find out about things going on not only within SGA, but across campus and to an extent, the city, state and nation.
