Lone senior honored in final match

Swing away: Women's tennis played its final home match of the season April 14, defeating Tennessee Weslyan 6-1.

Beata Knizat, graduating senior from Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario, was honored by her team April 14 before the Lady Mocs' final home match against Tennessee Wesleyan.

As the only senior player on the team, Knizat, 3-2, has sat out most of the season because of injury, but does have a decorated career at UTC. She went 7-10 in singles competition her freshman year, playing at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots and competing in seven Southern Conference matches.

Knizat went on to win two singles matches in Flight B at the Steve Baras Fall Classic, 2006, and posted SoCon wins over Western Carolina and Georgia Southern in 2007. This season, Knizat went 3-2 in the first matches of the season before taking a season-ending injury.

However, The women's tennis team took the victory against Wesleyan, 6-1, claiming all but one in singles competition.

No. 1 doubles Annie Green, Atlanta sophomore, and Jennemieke van der Veek, freshman from Schimmert, the Netherlands, took the first match 8-7 (7-3). The rest of the team followed suit with Emily Hangstefer, freshman from Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Kate Ksiezopolski, junior from Toronto, Canada, winning their match, 8-2. Charlotte Bossy, freshman from Koekelare, Belgium, and Shaina Singh, freshman from Vancouver, Canada, defeated their opponents, 8-0.

The Lady Mocs continued to dominate play in their singles matches, despite starting with a loss.

Hangstefer was defeated by Bulldog Karolina Pierko, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. But turning it around for the Lady Mocs was Singh, who took her match, 6-0, 6-0.

After that the scores were similar for the Lady Mocs as Van der Veek and Green claimed their matches at 6-0, 6-0. Also, Bossy beat out Jessica Robinson 6-1, 6-1, and Wishing took her match at 6-1, 6-0.

The UTC women's tennis team, 7-13, will finish the regular season Friday against Appalachian State.
