According to Suzanne Bishop, owner of Frankie and Julian's on Frazier Avenue, spring and summer trends include Bohemian-inspired styles, skins, studs, embroidery, tiers, tie-dye and color blocking.
"There is a lot of that Boho, ethnic-inspired…'hippie' look."
Teal Bilyeu, Ooltewah, Tenn., freshman, said her style is "eclectic, unique, bohemian."
"I try to have as much 'hippie' style as I can," she said.
But Bilyeu said she does not follow the trends. "I just like to express myself, through music, clothes, however."
Bilyeu said she loves florals and patterns, but prefers earth tones.
Bilyeu said her favorite store is Charlotte Russe and she sometimes shops at stores like Dillard's, but also goes thrift stores to find original pieces from the sixties and seventies.
"I like to throw things together and create my own style," she said. "I try my best to standout with different colors and different pieces."
Bilyeu said the most popular styles around campus currently are "scarves, cardigans, boots…even cowboy boots."
Bishop said "the scarf trend is carrying over into warm-weather fashion, as silly as that sounds."
Bishop said other trends are carrying over from fall, but are being tweaked. Bishop said there will be a lot of purples, corals and even yellows held over from last season.
Bishop said she considers the jumpsuits and rompers more fads than trends. "That's going to be for a special customer," she said.
Accessories are also getting an updated look, with new patterns and hardware.
"Every single magazine I've opened has had this: skins." Bishop said the trend will mostly be seen on accessories. "How could I forget this?" Bishop said, "Studs! Everything is studs."
In shoe trends, Bishop said "the wedge is huge and the gladiator sandal is still very strong, although it has been revised in brighter colors and skins."
Bishop said, "Black and white with a pop of color is huge. I've seen that in about every magazine I've opened." Bilyeu said she does not like the "bright, seventies prints" as much as the Bohemian-inspired style.
As far as wearing these period looks without looking costumed, Bishop said, "Don't do more than one or two to avoid the costume look. Don't try to overdo it.
"It's all about what you put with it. If you're wearing a silky, romantic blouse, you'd do a slim bottom. It's all about balance, the harmony of the prints and the cuts of the pieces," she said.
