A new wave is making its way across campus, but a radio is not needed to tune into this trend.
The Perch, UTC's student-run Web-based radio station, is finally getting off the ground, according to Alex Cooze, a senior from Chattanooga, and one of six disc jockeys for the station.
"We mainly play R&B, hip-hop and pop right now, but we hope to expand to other genres," he said.
Perch listeners will hear varied types of music depending on the DJ, and there could be blocks dedicated to certain genres and topic-driven talk programs, Cooze said.
"You're going to get different music on there [The Perch] through different shows, like a techno block or something like that," he said.
Cooze said he hopes to set up listening stations in the UC in the near future.
"We could have a computer dedicated to stream the Perch into the recreation center in the UC to help increase our audience," he said.
Olivia Bradley, a sophomore from Knoxville and one of the weekend DJs, said she loves her position at The Perch.
"We are always open to new ideas and plans," she said.
Nicole Brown, Sr. payroll clerk and faculty adviser for The Perch, said she has high hopes for the station's future.
"Everyone should tune in and check out what The Perch has to offer," Brown said.
Dr. Charlene Simmons, PhD, UC Foundation assistant professor in the communication department and previous advisor for The Perch, said she felt the station would be in good hands with Brown.
"She has a background in radio, which I think will help," Simmons said.
Brown worked for a couple local radio station in Chattanooga before being hired as senior payroll clerk for UTC's human resources department, according to Brown.
There is one catch to the Perch, Cooze said.
Because of bandwidth and copyright issues, The Perch can only support having approximately 200 listeners at a time, Cooze said.
The Perch staff is looking for more people to be on air.
Brown said she encourages anyone who is interested in working with The Perch to sign up.
