Showcase dorm rooms provide an enticement to college life for some and lower housing costs for others.
"Showcase dorm rooms are like recruitment tools as far as campus housing is concerned," Stephanie Roop, a housing and residence life staff member, said.
Each complex has one showcase room, Roop said. There are students who live in all of the showcase rooms except for UTC Place at this time, she said.
Students who have showcase dorm rooms receive a 50 percent discount off their total dorm price, Roop said.
"We were looking for good representatives of UTC and wanted rooms that showed potential students what the rooms could possibly look like," Roop said.
The students chosen to represent Johnson Obear apartments have a room that is eclectic and showed very different styles, and it was evident that they are great friends, Roop said.
In certain showrooms, a student living there must be present Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on other days during special events, Roop said.
Sara Neil, a Savannah, Tenn., sophomore, and one of the showcase room winners, said there are some scheduling conflicts when it comes to making sure someone will always be in the dorm from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Neil said she and her three roommates are really excited about hosting a showroom, but do have a few concerns.
"One of the hardest things is going to be making my bed everyday," Neil said.
She said she is a little worried something might get stolen during a tour, but hopes the tour guides will inspect any suspicious activity.
Ryan Ladner, the Johnson Obear resident director, said: "We've never had any instances of theft."
