Ecological Decisions for a Global Environment, the environmental group on campus, hopes to bag plenty of student interest to make the campus more eco-friendly in honor of Earth Day, which will be celebrated on campus April 15.

"We have a ton of events planned for Earth Day," Elizabeth Southall, an Atlanta, Ga., junior and president of EDGE, said.

"We are going to have the T-shirt sale, a plant sale, the plastic bag exchange and a drum circle," Southall said.

Southall said the bake sale may make a return on Earth Day as well. "The one we just had was a great success, and we had a pretty sweet selection of goods," she said.

EDGE recently picked a winning design from the T-shirt design contest the club sponsored, and Southall said the shirts will be available for purchase the April 15.

Southall said, "We want people to come by our tables in the UC [Atrium] with three to five grocery bags so that we can exchange them for new, reusable bags."

Max Quinlan, a Memphis junior and vice president of EDGE, said the club has invited several environmental groups to join them in celebrating Earth Day.

"We have Outdoor Chattanooga, Sequatchie Cove Farms and many other coming out to help promote environmentally sound habits," Quinlan said.

In the past, Quinlan said, EDGE has invited groups such as Big Frog Mountain to similar events, and it turned out to be quite successful.

"We are looking to have around 19 companies and groups in attendance [for Earth Day]," Quinlan said, "and they will set up in the Atrium alongside our tables."

EDGE has been behind many of the recent environmentally conscious programs, including the campus green fee which provides recycling bins to UTC residents living in all the housing complexes, Quinlan said.

"We are hoping we can get a campus efficiency campaign off the ground soon," Quinlan said.

"It would be a contest between the housing complexes to see who can save the most energy over a period of time, say a semester," he said.

Dr. David Aborn, an instructor in the environmental science department and faculty advisor of EDGE, said the club plans to attend a meeting about decreasing the environmental impact of the city of Chattanooga hosted by Mayor Ron Littlefield April 22, National Earth Day.

"The mayor mentioned us [EDGE] at last years task force meeting by name, so I think we should definitely be there for this meeting," Aborn said.

EDGE meets Wednesdays at noon in Holt 211 and the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain room in the UC.
