The running Mocs have been racking up individual accolades throughout the early stages of the outdoor track season.

Last weekend the team headed to Athens, Ga., and the individuals formed relay teams that were just as successful.

UTC competed in the Georgia Relays against schools such as the University of Georgia, Middle Tennessee State University and Marquette University, and they brought home five top five finishes.

Freshmen Chris Berry, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Joshue Vasquez, Kingsport, Tenn., partnered with upperclassman Michael Danehy, a junior from Morristown, Tenn., in the men's 800-meter realay and distance medley relay to take fifth in both events.

Sophomores Lauren Anderson, Greeneville, Tenn., and Anneli Uys, Somerville, Australia, worked together with senior Emily Wood. Kingsport, Tenn., and sophomore Monika Groppe, Germantown, Tenn., to take second in the 800-meter relay.

The two sophomores and senior also ran in the women's distance medley with Tara Gietema, a sophomore from Knoxville, and finished behind only the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia.

Despite the name of the competition, there were also a few individual events.

Sophomore Jordyn Radke, Whitby, Ontario, Canada, finished eighth in the 1500-meter run as well as ninth in the 300-meter steeplechase.

Senior Andrew Highlander, Hixson, Tenn., was the Mocs' highest finisher in the men's 1500, taking 13th in the event. Stephen George, a junior from Kingsport, Tenn., finished 12th in the 400 hurdles, and the Mocs placed three in the top ten in the 3000 steeplechase.

Junior David Moore, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, finished fifth in the event, followed by sophomore Allen Thurman, Chattanooga, in seventh and senior Kevin Huwe, Murfreesboro, Tenn., in tenth.

This weekend the running Mocs will pack up and head for Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jacket Invitational and try to add to their already strong outdoor season.

After the second consecutive trip to Georgia, the running Mocs have only one remaining tuneup before the Southern Conference Championships. That meet is the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville.

The Conference Championships are scheduled for May 16 and the NCAA regionals start May 29.
