The UTC Mocs club baseball team took on Georgia Tech in the first game of the season Sunday, winning 8-2 at Engel Stadium.
Junior Alex Craw, club founder and president, led the game, pitching five innings without gving up a run.
Senior Will Spann, Freshman Colton Green and Junior Kyle Sudberry put the Mocs on the board early in the second inning to push the Mocs ahead 2-0.
Senior Dustin Shepard doubled to the left-center gap to score two runs and increase the advantage. The Mocs notched four more runs in the fifth with six total hits, including two doubles.
Craw allowed the Yellow Jackets to gain three hits and walked three. However he remained at the top of his game, striking out three of Georgia Tech's batters.
Freshman pitcher Lance Snider took over in the 7th inning, allowing one hit and striking out a Yellow Jacket batter. Snider closed out the game for the club baseball team with a huge victory for The Mocs.
The Yellow Jackets had no hope for a win entering the second game as The Mocs club baseball team closed them out, 8-4.
"I was very pleased overall by our performance against Georgia Tech," Craw said. "I knew going in that our strengths this year would be our offense and our fielding. We scored 16 runs and only made 2 errors in the field Sunday which is a great way to start a season."
Freshman Michael Corbin started the Mocs off with a double that scored two runs in the first inning and set the pace for the rest of the play.
The Mocs held the advantage 3-2 going into the bottom of the third inning when Green hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence. The game was over from this point and The Mocs completed the day with a doubleheader sweep.
Defensively, sophomore Cal Aplin took over for The mocs, giving up only two runs in five innings.
The Mocs, 2-0, next face off against Tennessee Temple, 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Engel Stadium in an exhibition game. Last fall, the Mocs club team beat the Temple Crusader varsity team 8-7.
"I'm very excited about this upcoming spring season because we have the most talent that we have ever had on our club team," Craw said. "I think some of the guys on the team could definitely start on any legitimate NCAA team."
The following weekend, The Mocs club baseball team has a home series, starting with a game against conference rival Middle Tennessee State University.
Game times are set for 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Engel Stadium, Feb. 14, and 11:00 a.m. Feb. 15.
