UTC volleyball team improves 3-1 in SoCon play

The Lady Mocs took a 3-0 home victory over Western Carolina University, Saturday, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16.

The team is now 8-10 on the season and 3-1 in Southern Conference play.

Chattanooga senior libero Lara Newberry, Chattanooga, recorded 29 digs to bring her within 15 of the NCAA all-time mark of 2,791.

Laura Nethery, Hixon, Tenn., senior, and Jessica Scott, redshirt freshman from Lawrence, Kan., notched five kills apiece.

Courtney Barnes, Franklin, Tenn., sophomore, claimed eight kills and sophomore Aurore Kullak, Beloeil, Belgium, added nine kills.

Juniors Ashley Yeager, Parker, Colo., led the team with 15 kills, while Cassie Conner, Willow Springs, Ill., set a game high 38 assists.

WCU's Amanda Keer led their offesnse with 10 kills. Katie Hennessey led wtih 27 assists and Liz Rondone notched 20 digs on the afternoon.

The Lady Mocs took the first set with a series of long scoring streaks, including 7 straight points to put the team up 17-6.

UTC continued to work as a team to take the second set 25-20. But the Catamounts came out strong in the third.

WCU got off to a quick start and grabbed the early lead before the Lady Mocs came back to gain a 13-11 advantage.

UTC's offense did not relinquish the lead as they scored five more points and extended the lead to seven.

WCU answered back with two points, but the Lady Mocs used another 5-0 run to put away the match for good.

The Lady Mocs continued their five game home stand Wednesday night with a game against Samford.

"Samford is playing unbelievable volleyball right now," Head Coach Lisa Rhodes said, according to gomocs.com. "They are coming into [the game] leading a lot of offensive categories, but hopefully our defense will be able to frustrate them and make the commit some mistakes."

Yeager leads the team with an average of 2.33 kills per set, Barnes with a .308 hitting percentage and Cassie Connor with an average of 10 assists per set. Newberry averages 5.91 digs per set.

The Lady Mocs next face off against Wofford, Saturday, and Furman, Sunday at Maclellan Gym.
