UTC's soccer team fell back into its old ways over the weekend at the Crimson Tide Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Chattanooga, 3-5-1, was scoreless in two games, defeated by host Alabama 5-0 Friday night, and beat 3-0 by Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon.
For a coach who has been looking for consistency from his young team all season long, these were not the results head coach J.D. Kyzer was hoping for with the Southern Conference opener less than a week away.
Alabama outmatched UTC with a much more talented team, forcing freshman goalkeeper Allie Preston, Asheville, N.C., to make 15 saves.
The trouble started early for Preston and the Lady Mocs against the Crimson Tide.
Kailey Corken opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, and Jessica Deegan added on just 10 minutes later.
Chattanooga went into halftime only trailing by the two goals, but they could not rebound in the second.
Corken once again started the scoring with a free kick goal from just outside the box.
Deegan added a second as well, and Victoria Frederick put in her third goal of the season for Alabama.
The host team outshot the Lady Mocs by a 37-14 margin, while Alabama earned 3 yellow cards to the Lady Mocs one.
Katharina Rheinheimer, freshman, led UTC with four shots and one goal, followed by juniors Chelsea Hurst and Marlee Jenkins with three shots and two on goal.
The Friday game against Alabama marked the fourth time the teams faced off against each other.
The Saturday afternoon game against Jacksonville produced more of the same game play.
Preston added seven more saves, but the team could not give her any support on the offensive end.
The lone first half goal by Jacksonville's Keri Zwikker proved to be the game winner.
Freshman D.K. Henry, Queens Village, N.Y., put two shots on goal for half of the Lady Mocs' total, but no one managed to find the back of the net.
The Dolphins outshot UTC 17-10, and added two more goals in the second half to put away the game.
The final goal for the Dolphins came on a header from a corner kick by JU's Devin Dowell.
Combined with the 5-0 loss to UT Knoxville in the season opener, the Lady Mocs have struggled all semester against Southeastern Conference opponents.
However, Southern Conference teams are the only opponents left on the schedule.
The Lady Mocs will start their conference play Friday night at the North River Soccer Complex against UNC Greensboro.
Along with Friday night's game against UNC Greensboro, the team will also host Elon University Sunday at 2 p.m.
