The Lupton Library has purchased subscriptions to two new databases for students and faculty to access, according to Theresa Liedtka, dean of the Lupton Library, said.

The larger database, Web of Science, is not limited to scientific facts, Liedtka said.

Within the database, there are three sections: the Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Liedtka said. These sections can be used to narrow a search. Links such as the "advanced search" link and the "cited reference search" link can be used to narrow searches further.

Virginia Cairns, head of reference and instruction services in the Lupton Library, said she agrees that this database will be helpful to both new students and upperclassmen.

The second database is the Women and Social Movements Database, Liedtka said. This is a group of more personal materials such as journals, diaries, articles and bibliographies.

"[This is an] archive of the publications and documents of local, state and federal commissions on the status of women from the 1963 to the present," Liedtka said.

Included in this database are 2,400 documents, 32,000 full-text documents and 1,700 authors, Liedtka said. She described the Women and Social Movements Database as "esoteric mixed materials."

In his State of the University Address Monday, Chancellor Roger Brown said, despite budget cuts, the university plans to continue contributing money to the Lupton Library.

"We know that we are going to have a huge, new, exciting library in a few years," Brown said.

"But in the meantime we must make sure we continue strong acquisitions programs and strong support programs in the current library," Brown said

The Lupton Library is given $32,000 by UTC every year for general enhancements, Liedtka said. What to purchase with this money is based on assessments of campus and student need.

UTC uses buying power to get discounts on database subscriptions, Liedtka said. For instance, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville first purchased the Web of Science database so UTC purchased the subscription from them and got a $19,000 discount.

Cairns said the faculty has been asking for these databases for years and the library is excited and relieved to finally have this opportunity to provide access.

Liedtka said "[I hope that] faculty and students will be able to receive high quality resources."

She said she encourages students to get online and discover the broad range of information available to them through the Lupton Library.

Sam Forgey, an Ooltewah, Tenn., junior, said he has mixed feelings about the databases.

"I thought they were hit or miss depending on your topic," Forgey said. "If [the databases] help students with projects then that is a good way to spend money. In a roundabout way they are spending money on students."
