The UTC women's soccer team continued to struggle offensively in two matches this weekend.
A 0-0 tie to High Point Friday night and 2-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon made it three straight games to open the season without a goal.
High Point traveled from North Carolina for a game, which went into double overtime and ended without either team really threatening to break the game open.
Led by junior Chelsea Hurst, Flintville, Tenn., and sophomore Serena Allen, Knoxville, the defense shut down the Lady Panthers for the full 110 minutes.
Freshman Jordan Middleton, Ooltewah, Tenn., also stepped in to play strong defense for Marlee Jenkins, Lenoir City, Tenn., who was in and out with an injury.
The Lady Panthers narrowly outshot UTC, 9-8 in the game.
Caroline DeRhodes, Waxhaw, N.C., came off the bench to play a strong game for the Lady Mocs in the midfield. But the lack of scoring opportunities was a glaring weakness for the young team.
Freshmen D.K. Henry, Queens Village, N.Y., and Morgan Shelton, Ooltewah, Tenn., are quick at the striker position, but there were difficulties getting them the ball either on the run or in open space.
Head Coach J.D. Kyzer faces the choice of mixing up the lineup or building on the strengths before the conference schedule begins.
However, High Point tied Wofford earlier in the season. Wofford was a strong team in the Southern Conference last year, which could be a sign of improvement for the Lady Mocs.
Sunday afternoon made it 190 minutes of playing time without a goal for either side. Eastern Kentucky finally broke through with a goal from Lauren Imsande late in the game.
The Colonels added another goal from Laura Caldon with only four minutes to play.
Katharina Rheinheimer, Lindberg, Germany, played well for the Lady Mocs, with two shots.
The Lady Colonels outshot UTC 14-9 in the game.
Freshman Allie Preston, Asheville, N.C., remains a bright spot for the team. She recorded her first shutout against High Point and has held her own against the stronger, non-conference teams.
Next week the Lady Mocs will face off against against Austin Peay in Clarksville, Friday, followed by a game against Lipscomb, Sunday.
