The UTC Music Department will be welcoming special guest Peter Cooper to perform on campus at UTC, according to Dr. Jonathan McNair, U. C. Foundation associate professor of music and notable composer.

Cooper is the first act of the 2008 concert season, according to a university-wide e-mail.

Morgan Thomas, a freshman music education major from Harrison, Tenn., expressed her interest and enthusiasm in hope of attending the "Peter Cooper and Friends: It's All Brahms!" concert with free admission to the public.

"I heard [about it] on the radio. I was listening to 90.5, and I saw a poster of it this morning," Thomas said.

When asked if she had similar aspirations as Cooper, Thomas replied, "I actually have other plans... but music is the thing I love the most. I look forward to being able to teach others music."

Drew McCallie, a junior music education major from Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, said he hoped to receive his doctorate someday and accomplish similar things.

McCallie said he planned on attending the recital. "I really enjoy music, and Brahms' works are fantastic."

McNair is also eagerly anticipating the upcoming concert.

McNair said there is something for everyone in this performance. "Well, these are professional musicians," McNair said.

"It's chamber music, which is a small group combination. It's music by Brahms, who I think is a very good composer. It's professional music played, and it's free," he said.

"These are opportunities I hope our students will take advantage of. Live performances, when done well, it's a wonderful kind of energy," McNair added.

Cooper will perform at the Roland Hayes Concert Hall on Thurs. Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m., according to McNair.
