Tennis teams trounce Lipscomb

The men's and women's tennis teams took home twin victories against Lipscomb, 0-1, Saturday in the opening game of the year.
The Lady Mocs ended up 6-1 after winning three double matches and 5 of 6 singles duals, while the men's team went 7-0 against the Bison.
Seniors Lindsey Ballard, Lilburn, Ga., Bonnie Adams, Newport Beach, Calif., and junior Beata Knizat, Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario, took the top three lineup positions. First-year Head Coach Jeff Clark put freshmen Grace Robinette, Chattanooga, Annie Green, Atlanta, and Arianna Sanjines, Chattanooga, in the last three spots for the women.
Ballard, playing at No. 1, defeated Lipscomb's Raphaela Jann 6-2, 6-1 and Adams, No. 3, defeated Claire Landry 6-1, 6-3. However, Knizat, No. 2, lost to the Bison's Kara Jackson, 6-3, 6-2.
The freshmen climbed onto the scene, winning each of their matches. No. 4 Grace Robinette breezed by Olivia Ellis, 6-2, 6-3. Annie Green, No. 5, defeated Caitlin Khouri, 6-1, 7-6 and No.6 Arianna Sanjines slammed Marianna Rangel, 6-0, 6-1.
Veterans also led the way on the men's squad. Head Coach Carlos Garcia put seniors Badr Bouabdellah, Barcelona, Spain, and Razvan Axente, Braila, Romania, in the first two positions and juniors Peter Sauska, Budapest, Hungary, and Pavel Vostrikov, Orenburg, Russia, at Nos. 3 and 4. Freshmen Hasan Hamadeh, Memphis and Rick van de Bovenkamp, The Netherlands, were 5th and 6th.
Bouabdellah and Axente both picked up 6-4, 6-1 wins against Lipscomb's Joe McCardle and Daniel Hangstefer. Sauska defeated James Murrell, 6-3, 6-4, while Vostrikov stepped past Jeff West, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Hamadeh beat Bison foe Josh Cummings, 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 and Bovenkamp won over Mario Hernandez, 7-6, 7-6.
Last year the veterans led the men's tennis team to an outstanding 17-7 record. Besides newcomers Hamadeh and Bovnkamp, Tyler Pullen of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Gordon Rudell, Knoxville and Robbie Diamond of Thousand Oaks, Calif are working hard to make the lineup.
For the women's doubles, Adams and Knizat beat Lady Bison Jackson and Landry, 8-6. Ballard and Robinette came in next over Ellis and Jann, 8-4, while Ksiezopolski and Sanjines also defeated Khouri and Rangel, 8-4.
Axente and Bouabellah won their doubles match up against Hangstefer and Hernandez, 8-3 and Sauska and Vostrikov defeated Mizell and Murell, 8-1. However, Diamond and Bovenkamp lost against Lipscomb opponents McCardle and West, 9-7.
The men's team is coming off a season in which they fell in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Championships to No. 1 seed Elon. The women's team fell to Appalachian State in the first round of the tournament.
The men travel to Middle Tennessee State University Saturday and the Lady Mocs take on Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky., Feb. 2.
