The trips will allow participants to earn class credit while immersing themselves in the history and culture of a foreign country.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Both the communications and English departments are offering trips to Scotland from June 9-27, 2008, according to Kittrell Rushing, department head of communications. Rushing and his wife Fran Bender, professor of English, will be leading the two trips.
These trips are coordinated through the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad, which is an association of 15 colleges and universities with overseas study programs, according to Rushing.
Rushing said only UTC students will be allowed to participate in both UTC programs simultaneously.
"My dear wife and I intend to coordinate our field trips so that students from both courses can take part in the full range of opportunities," Rushing said.
"Under the Kilt" is a digital media communications course that will focus on reporting from several sites in Scotland, according to Rushing.
He said the trips will focus on several locations around the country that will provide students with the history and culture of Scotland.
He said students will collect various media on the trip, and upon their return to campus, students will have a week to complete their final projects.
"From Beatrix Potter to Harry Potter" is a children's literature course that will provide students with the opportunity to visit various sites in Scotland that inspired the works of several children's authors, according to Rushing. Some of the authors covered will include Potter, Rowling, Lewis and Barrie.
Rushing said both of the courses will include a weekend trip to the Scottish Highlands as well.
Rushing said students who want to go on these trips should contact Hugh Prevost, director of cooperative education and international studies. The deadline for registration is Feb. 29.
Paris, France
Three classes will be offered in Paris, France, from June 1-29, according to Victoria Steinberg, assistant professor of French. The classes are "Paris as a Text," "France under the Occupation" and "Language and Culture."
