The Lady Mocs won the Great Smokies Intercollegiate tournament, taking their second title of the season Sunday.

The team travelled to Waynesville, N.C. and put an end to Western Carolina's quest for six straight home titles. They became the fourth team to claim the title in the nine year history of the tournament.

The Lady Mocs finished fourth after the first day of play with a score of 299.

Belmont held the lead after the first day with a team score of 294, followed by Elon at 296 and Western Carolina at 297.
The Lady Mocs were able to turn the score around during the second round, however, carding a four over 292 to finish with a cumulative score of 591 for the win.

The team finished one stroke better to edge out Elon University, carding a score of 592. South Alabama, Belmont and Western Carolina rounded out the top five with 599, 601 and 606, respectively.

Coach Colette Murray said he was excited about the win.

"They knew that they had to play hard to win it and they did." Murray said. "We're delighted."

Freshman Emma de Groot of Coffs Harbor, Australia was tied for sixth after the first round of play with an even par but shot 71 in the second round for a two-day total of 143. She finished in second place for the second time this season.

The rest of team responded to the challenge of being down early as well. Sophomore Kayla Stewart, Cookeville, Tenn., tied for sixth and finished three over par for a total of 147 and freshman Christine Wolf, Igls, Austria, tied for thirteenth with a total of 148.

This first-place finish accompanies their win in the Chris Banister Gamecock Golf Classic September 9 in Jacksonville, Ala., with a tournament record-total-low of 885 over three days.

Chattanooga is currently ranked No. 62 in the nation, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. The Lady Mocs will travel to the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa to play at the University of Iowa's Hawkeye Invitational Oct 6.
