Guest speaker Stephanie Hollis, who spoke for the Office of Placement and Student Employment, opened this week's meeting.
Hollis said she is aiming to increase student awareness of their programs and hopes to get SGA's assistance in spreading the word. The office of placement will be sponsoring two career days in February. The first is on Feb. 7 and will be focused on future full-time and part-time employment while the second, on Feb. 8, is primarily focused on summer employment.
Hollis also wanted to remind all students there are a plethora of services offered from their office, which is located in room 315 in the University Center.
Nine SGA senator seats need to be filled. Anyone interested in being appointed as a senator should contact SGA so they can fill out an application. Vice President Bill Staley said the beginning of the year vacancies are not out of the ordinary.
The new wellness center that was supposed to break ground this month will now be pushed into March or possibly later. The main reason for the delay stems from the approval process the proposed plan needed to go through before work could begin.
According to President Lydia Grafton, new security measures have been put in place due to the concerns raised in light of the increase in crime that occurred late last year.
Some of the changes include cameras at the doors, door checks, police living on campus, and an increase in the number of guards.
Proposed future changes include new rules for UTC Place residents who are Chattanooga State students, "lock your door" stickers on the inside of doors, and reminders to call security if you discover anything amiss.
SGA also announced some special events going on at the "Gold Rush" basketball game on Jan. 27. The game starts at 2 p.m. and the first 500 students will get school spirit t-shirts. Anyone with one of these shirts will also be able to join a "Dinner with the Team" event after the game ends.
SGA also discussed plans to be harsher on their attendance policy from now on. Last semester there were a large number of excused absences for a multitude of reasons. From now on only school related events will allow a senator an excuse to miss a meeting.
Other changes SGA plans to enact include a new, more detailed constitution for the Freshman Senate.
