With almost half of their 2006-2007 season complete, the UTC wrestling team plans to continue its success with steady improvement.
"We're right where we thought we would be," Coach Chris Bono said. "We're beating the guys who we're supposed to beat."
Bono, who is in his first season as head coach, was referring to the 4-0 record that the team maintains thus far during one of its most competitive seasons, according to GoMocs.com news.
The success began with the team's first competitions at UTC.
On the Nov. 11 season opener, the Mocs defeated both Davidson and Virginia Tech, out-scoring the teams 46-6 and 29-9 respectively.
In the dual competitions, UTC lost only one match to Davidson and two to Virginia Tech.
UTC wrestler Michael Keefe won two technical falls to lead the team in their first win, according to GoMocs.
The third and fourth wins for UTC took place Nov. 25 at Maclellan Gymnasium over Anderson University and Cumberland University.
In their victories, the Mocs only lost two matches with a pin loss to Anderson and a single match decision going to Cumberland.
Jeff Romero, assistant athletic director for media relations, believes the wins are good indications of the wrestling program's progress.
"The team is right on course," Romero said.
Romero also credits Bono as a part of the success the team has had thus far.
"[Bono] is extremely qualified and the administration has every belief that he is the right one to lead the team to be a national contender," Romero said.
Bono said that he plans to continue succeeding in the season by "improving everyday.
"We want to win the games we're supposed to and win the ones we're not supposed to," Bono said. "We're sticking to the basic fundamentals and working [the wrestlers'] minds as hard as their bodies."
